George Soros is the founder of the Open Society Foundations. He is one of the world’s largest donors to charitable organizations. Since 1984, Soros has donated over $13 billion to various charities. The Foundations are the second largest philanthropic organization in the United States, second to Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The organization is the largest donor to the support of Europe’s Roma population. In 1993, Soros Foundations helped with humanitarian aid and relief during Yugoslavia’s war. In the U.S., the Foundations support reform of criminal justice system, reform of drug laws, and supporting immigration laws.
Soros has given the Foundations a total of $914.7 million so far in 2017. Twenty nine percent of the funds have gone to promoting democracy and human rights. Eighteen percent has gone to economic development, 15 percent went to justice reform, and smaller percentages went to healthcare and education.
