About Empiricus Research Consulting Company

Empiricus Research is a consulting company that sells information through financial newsletters. It is structured as a partnerhip between the American company The Agora, and three Brazilian entrepreneurs: Rodolfo Amstalden, who previously worked as a professor at Faculdade Cásper Líbero and as consultant for International Paper, Caio Mesquita, who already worked in the financial market, and Felipe Miranda, who was a professor at Fundação Getúlio Vargas in 2010.

Currently Empiricus has over 180,000 newsletter subscribers. It also owns 50% of the “O Antagonista” website, in a partnership with Mário Sabino and Diogo Mainardi.

The website creators openly defend the “politically incorrect.” They are not shy about using polemic promotion strategies. Empiricus first received major attention after publishing the “The End of Brazil” video in 2014, where they attacked the economic policies of then president Dilma Rousseff. They also predicted a disaster for the Brazilian economy.

The videos are promoted with advertisement via Google Ads and social media views. They exploit themes designed to attract customers attention, usually dealing with political matters. Quite a few of them were published during the Brazilian presidential elections and were suspended and reinstated on the courts.

Empiricus offers free bulletins (called “Mercado em cinco minutos”, meaning “Market in five minutes”) as well as different options of monthly subscriptions to paid newsletters. According to Felipe Miranda, the subscribers of “O Antagonista” newsletter were fundamental for growing the group newsletter business.

The Agora Group is the holding and shareholder controller of Empiricus. It was funded in 1978 and is currently based in Baltimore (USA). It operates several newsletters about finance, travels, health, among others.

As a coincidence, both company names have a Greek origin. Sextus Empiricus lived during the 2nd century. He was a greek philosopher renowned as the main pyrrhonic skeptic. Ultimately, this belief is about not having any beliefs at all. The three founding partners of Empiricus research are also partners in other newsletter-based businesses and financial portfolio management companies as well. Go To This Page for more information.
